Al-Shabaab Gunmen Storm police station in central Somalia.

Mogadishu (Hara24) – An explosion that occurred at a police station which also serves as an AMISOM base in the town of Beledweyne followed by gunfire is believed to have left behind a number of casualties.

The attack believed to have been carried out by Al-Shabaab members started when a car filled with explosives slammed into the entrance of the police station and then detonated, which was then followed by a number of Al-Shabaab fighters pouring into the base and attacking the soldiers manning the base. According to unverified reports the soldiers inside the targeted base were from Djibouti, who fight under the AMISOM.

Somali Official who talked with the media said Al-shabaab members attacked the police station and killed soldiers in the police station.”Armed militants went in to the police station and continued killing policemen,” legislator Dahir Jesow told the media.

According to several sources the Al-Shabaab fighters had overrun the base and are now in control of the base; however these claims cannot be verified yet. Our correspondent in the Hiiran region reported that dozens had been killed in the attack, but the death toll is believed to rise as the fight for the base rages on.

Other Reports also suggest that the gunmen took control of Hotel Madina which hosts many government officials in beledweyne Town.

Al-Shabaab fighters have been stepping up their attacks in Beledweyne in the past weeks, however according to local residents this attack could be the worst so far.
