Deadly IED attack kills 8 government troops in the city of Afgoye today.

Mogadishu (Harar24) At least 8 Government soldiers have been killed by an explosion caused by an IED which targeted a vehicle carrying government official who were travelling inside the city of Afgoye in the Lower Shabelle region.

 

According to eyewitnesses the explosion occurred at the center if the city when the vehicle carrying top government official was targeted with a powerful IED around 10:00 a.m. local time today resulting the killing of the government official and 8 of his security personnel.

 

According to a government official in the area , the IED was planted into the road before the vehicle carrying government official came through “The explosion was triggered via the use of a remote control device which we are now investigating.” he said.

 

Eye witnesses also told our reporter that the IED went off whilst the vehicle carrying the top official was going through a busy intersection in the center of the city.“The 7 dead were all government officers who were security personnel for the official. Eye witness told our reporter. “One soldier was also seriously injured but was pronounced dead after reaching the hospital.” The eye witness added.

 

Al-Shabaab have claimed responsibility for today’s deadly IED attack which it said targeted top government official and his security personnel.

 

In a reaction to today’s explosion, the police conducted heavy search operations arresting dozens of people in connection with the bomb blast.

 

The roads in Lower Shabelle particularly have become notorious for its numerous IED attacks and ambushes staged by Al-Shabaab against government officials, However today’s attack was one of the deadliest  in recent weeks.

 

In the past many government officials had been targeted in such attacks, the most recent being the ambush that President Hassan Sh. Mahamud landed close to Marka in the Lower Shabelle region.
