Reports of Stability emerging in parts of Lower Shabelle Region

Mogadishu (Harar24) – The previously chaotic areas of the Lower Shabelle that witnessed some of the most intense fighting between Somali government troops and rival clans is now slowly turning calm.

Locals claim that this the result of the negotiations held by Al-Shabaab between the warring clans in Bulomarer. “So many people lost their lives and many more were displaced just less than a week ago, and now things are returning back to normal. It almost seems surreal” said Sa’id Osman, a local merchant from Janale.

Some of the worst fighting took place at “KM-50”, Janale and surrounding villages where more than seventy people had lost their lives. Clan elders had gathered in Bulomarer last Wednesday in a meeting hosted by Al-Shabaab in attempts to reconciliate between the opposing factions. All factions agreed to stop the fighting between them, to head him and convince everyone to lay down their arms. Now almost a week later, the successful results of that gathering are being seen as peace and stability are slowly returning to the areas.

Mahad Ali Nur, one of the clan elders who attended the meeting at Bulomarer said: “We are now finalizing what we agreed on, we’re telling everyone to lay down their arms and restraining everyone. We’re already seeing the fruits of our efforts.”

Al-Shabaab who have held previous successful reconciliatory gatherings between rivaling clans will no doubt see these latest results as a popularity booster, believing to have resolved that which the government failed to do.
