Somalia’s Puntland appoints former Somali PM as new president
Mogadishu (Harar24) –Abdiwali Mahamed Gaas is Puntland’s new president, according to official results from Garoowe, the capital of Somalia’s semi-autonomous region of Puntland
The former Prime Minister who had been considered to be a “dark horse” candidate, has won the third and final round of election by getting 33 votes while his opponent Abdirahman Mohamed Faroole received 32.
Abdiweli Gaas who is technocrat educated in the United States came second to the serving president Abdirahman Faroole in the first round & second round of voting, and unseated the incumbent president in the third and final round.
Clashes between supports of Faroole and Gaas were reported outside the parliament building in Garoowe, however the situations is said to have eased after intervention by security forces.
Puntland, which declared autonomy in 1998, cut all ties with Somali Government last August after accusing it of not being fair to them and not giving them enough funds and finances, including that which was received as donations and as “support” from other nations.
