Several people killed during violent attacks in Mogadishu in the last 24 hours
Mogadishu (Harar24) – Clashes and explosions that occurred last night in some of Mogadishu’s districts has led to arrests and crackdowns on residents of some areas.
A heavy battle ensued last night between Al-Shabaab militants and Somali troops in Yaqshid when the militants began attacking a base in the area. Local residents reported the battle lasted for a while, until the Al-Shabaab fighters slipped away under the guise of the night. “It felt as if the whole area was under fire, it seemed very intense. We didn’t even dare to go outside, even after the clashes were over, out fear of being arrested.” Said a local resident
Although no word has come from the government regarding last night’s attack and casualties, some residents report having seen two dead soldiers and six injured. The residents further added that a number of AMISOM and Somali troops were seen patrolling in the area that came under attack last night.
A house in the Waberi district of Mogadishu hosting several bands of musicians also came under attack when a hand grenade was hurled at the building, injuring one person. Despite the presence of troops in the area at that particular time, the perpetrators still managed to get away, with none being arrested for the attack.
Meanwhile, a man was reportedly killed in Mogadishu’s Wadajir district after being shot by a man wearing the Somali military uniform. According to eyewitnesses the man came under fire after refusing to hand his cell phone over to the man in uniform. The murderer fled the scene and still remains at large.
Similarly, a woman was gunned down today by gunmen in Mogadishu’s Hodan district, several sources have indicated that the woman may have been working for the Somali intelligence services.
Mogadishu has been experiencing attacks almost on a daily and nightly basis in the last few months, despite efforts by the Somali federal government to improve security and safety.
