Amisom Convoy’s hit and run incident causes the death of a civilian in Mogadishu
Mogadishu (Harar24) – Hundreds of people in Mogadishu took to the streets today in protest of the death of a Somali man who was run over by an armored vehicle manned by AMISOM forces earlier today.
The man identified as 41 year old Saalax Nuur Maxamed, was a taxi driver by occupation who was well known and popular in the Hodan area. The unfortunate incident occurred at the Makkah Mukarramah road and left the man instantly dead when the armored vehicle hit him while driving at a relative high speed. The Makkah Mukarramah road is a frequently used road by AMISOM forces, who according to residents rarely make stops out of fear of IEDs and mines.
The residents in the area were left in utter shock as they saw the man being driven over by the armored vehicles while the AMISOM forces driving the vehicle didn’t even stop or look back at what had occurred.
Although, the AMISOM spokesman Annadif had expressed his sorrow over the incident and sent his condolences to the family of the victim, many Somalis including, relatives, friends, tribesmen were not satisfied or conciliated by the AMISOM statement and were left enraged by the incident.
Large crowds of people gathered where the incident occurred and even larger crowds came out protesting in the aftermath. Security forces were called in an attempt to disperse the crowd, but it was to no avail. One tribal elder was quoted as saying: “We will not bury our man until we bring his murderers to justice!” Others at the protest screamed: “Away with these foreigners who are killing us!”
AMISOM forces have been growing increasingly unpopular amongst the Somali population amongst accusations of rape, corruption and now killing. This latest incident will leave a scar on both the Somali people who have become agitated and the AMISOM forces who’ll have to convince the Somali people that they are merely peace keeping forces.
