Hundreds of people gathered in Al-Shabaab led protest in the coastal town of Baraawe

Mogadishu (Harar24) – Hundreds of people gathered together in an Al-Shabaab led protest in the coastal town of Baraawe in the Lower Shabelle Region.

Anti-AMISOM, anti-US & anti-Israel slogans were chanted as the crowd of people burned flags and protested against the presence of AMISOM in the country and the recent addition of Ethiopia to the AMISOM, whom many Somalis view as an archenemy to Somalia.

In addition to average people, clan elders and religious figures the protest was also attended by several Al-Shabaab leaders who were the organizers of the protest. Such events are not rare occurrences, as Al-Shabaab often organizes protests, rallies and public gathering for different purposes.

According to eyewitnesses the large gathering expressed anger over what they viewed as crimes committed by AMISOM such as raping of women and the recent death of a Somali man run over by AMISOM.

The protest comes after a violent protest held in Baidoa where AMISOM troops were stoned by local residents after AMISOM refused to allow clan elders to hold a conference regarding setting up an autonomous state.

Baraawe is believed by many to be a buzzing Al-Shabaab hub which witnessed a Navy SEAL raid last October.
