At least four civilians killed in bloody confrontation with Somali army in Middle Shabelle
Mogadishu (Harar24) – Confrontation between government soldiers based in Bal’ad and local residents occurred at a village situated around 20-km east from Bal’ad which left several people dead and injured.
Reports indicate that the confrontation at the village known as Yaaqle came as a result over a dispute of a piece of land in which the clan of the district chief of Bal’ad was involved in when a court ruled against the then owners of the land who were locals . The court ruling decreed that locals who claimed to be the owners evacuate the land for the other party whom were decreed as the owners. The locals refused to abide by the court order which they saw as usurping of their ancestral land, their refusal however was met with a brutal response.
The local residents, who belong to a minority tribe in the Middle Shabelle, claim that the disgruntled district chief called in government troops to forcefully expel them. The locals enraged by this court order & the army’s involvment came out in protest which turned violent when the army opened fire on the unarmed protesters.
Eyewitnesses and locals reported that at least four civilians had been killed whilst three others were reportedly injured.
In recent times resident of Bal’ad and surrounding areas have been complaining of injustices committed by the local administrations against minority tribes amidst an increase in the usurping of lands and farms.
