Dayniile attacked again during daylight while two coastal towns fall into Al-Shabaab hands.
Mogadishu (Harar24) – Heavily armed Al-Shabaab forces attacked AMISOM and governmental base near Garasbaaley in Mogadishu’s Dayniile district yesterday.
Residents near by the base said Al Shabaab militants attacked the AMISOM and government troop bases before dusk with heavy weapons which resulted in a fierce firefight which lasted up to around 9PM.
“Heavily armed Alshabaab men attacked a base near us around 5.30PM and we couldn’t leave our house until late in to the night” a resident told a Harar24 reporter over the phone from his house in Garasbaaley.
In further developments heavily armed militants belonging to Al-Shabaab took over the coastal towns of Gandarshe and Jilib Marka in Lower Shabelle after engaging in heavy battles with Somali government forces that lasted hours. The takeover by Al-Shabaab of these coastal towns comes a little over a week after government forces took over the towns.
According to residents in both Gandarshe and Jilib Marka the Al-Shabaab forces who took over the town yesterday morning were heavily armed and delivered the Friday sermons in both towns, informing the residents to work with them in their fight against Somali Government forces and AMISOM.
A well known elder in Jilib Marka Mahamud Adow informed Harar24 over the phone that once the heavy fighting in the night abated, they were surprised to find out morning that Al-Shabaab had taken over the town.
“After heavy fighting that lasted all night we woke up and found out that heavily armed Islamic fighter where in the city” said Adow.
These incidents seem to coincide with other attacks & assaults carried out by Al-Shabaab in the southern and central regions of Somalia. Some analysts believe that the AMISOM and Somali forces will continue to bear the brunt of Al-Shabaab’s guerrilla tactics and face casualties, even if they are pushed out every single town they control, this had lead to them to believe that they are compelled to find other solutions, even if it has to be negotiating with the Al-Qaeda linked group.
