Tribal elders shot dead in Bay region
Mogadishu (Harar24) – At least eight tribal elders where shot dead in the outskirt of Burhakaba town in Bay region as they travel from Baidoa to Mogadishu late this afternoon residents confirm to Harar24.
According to witnesses the vehicle that was carrying the elders who were part of a delegation that created and voted for the (SW6) state which is led by Madoobe Nuunow were stopped by unknown gunmen as they tried to cross the main Burhakaba bridge before the gunmen ordered the eight elders out of the car and shot them dead in an execution style.
The reason behind the killing is still unknown but according to several sources the gunmen are believed be loyal to former speaker of Somali parliament Shariif Hasan Sheikh Adan who is now leading an effort to set up three province semi-autonomous state (SW3).However other sources also suggest that the Al-Qaida linked group Al-Shabaab who are against any semi-autonomous state maybe behind the killing.
This incident comes after hundreds of angry residents who are against the arrival of Shariif Hasan who is trying to create three province semi-autonomous states in Baidoa held large protests in the town today.
The real motive behind the shooting is still not known and no one has yet to take responsibility of the incident, but many residents in baidoa believe this will inflame in already tense situation in the region
