Galgadud offensive proves to be a challenge for the Ethiopian forces
Mogadishu (Harar24) – As the Ethiopian army marches on foot under the scorching sun in Somalia’s Galgadud province, unexpected obstructions seem to be hindering the progression of the Ethiopian offensive. The soldiers are forced to trek on in one of Somalia’s most ruthless province so as not to lose the momentum of the ongoing offensive.
Amidst bickering between the “Ahlu Sunnah wal Jama’ah” Sufi militias & government officials on one hand and the hostile tribes inhabiting the Galgadud province who have refused to co-operate with Ethiopians on the other hand, the Ethiopians are now caught in a predicament as the militant Al-Shabaab movement have begun hitting back hard at the Ethiopian army.
It has been more than three days since the Ethiopian forces had left the town of Dhusamareb headed for the Al-Shabaab held town of El-Bur in an attempt to expel the militants from the town and surrounding areas. However the plan hasn’t been going as planned so far, with a lack of Somali soldiers for support and neither a helping hand from the local tribes to serve as guides. On the other hand the Al-Shabaab fighters, who consist of local fighters from the region and from other parts of Somalia have been mustering up a force to confront the advancing Ethiopian forces.
Several sources mentioned that yesterday at a small settlement called “El La Helay” around thirty kilometers away from Dhusamareb, the Ethiopian forces were taken by surprise as the Al-Shabaab militants attacked them which resulted in a fierce fight lasting for almost eight hour continuously.
Residents in the area told Harar24 that the Al-Shabaab forces retreated into the darkness as the sun set, whereas the Ethiopian forces set camp a few miles away from the settlement nearby a place where they had been staying the past days.
According to Al-Shabaab’s military spokesman Sheikh Abdul Aziz Abu Mus’ab the battle cost the Ethiopians “heavily” while boasting that they had killed many “enemy soldiers”.
The Ethiopian advance to Al-Shabaab strongholds might be on a temporarily halt, although it’s strongly believed that the Ethiopian forces will continue their march despite all odds, the Al-Qaeda affiliates have made one thing clear, they’re always close by, lurking in the darkness.
