Al-Shabaab claims victory after heavy clashes near the town of Fiidow

Mogadishu (Harar24) – Details surrounding heavy clashes that occurred around the small town of Fiidow in the Middle Shabelle have started to emerge.

 

According to the latest reports the clashes which took place yesterday at Haralugole, a well situate around seven kilometers from Fiidow, have left at least fifteen people dead, including government soldiers. Residents claim that a convoy of well armed Somali troops were ambushed by Al-Shabaab militants after leaving to Fiidow towards Buloburde, prompting a fierce battle which lasted for some hours.

 

According to residents the battle left a number of people dead and several vehicles burned. “We visited the well at Haralugole after the battle died down, upon arriving we saw many dead bodies wearing Somali military outfits. We saw many militants passing by the area” said Abdi Gaawo, a local herder.

 

The Islamist Al-Shabaab organization claimed to have captured three vehicles belonging to the Somali forces while destroying another. The military spokesman of the organization Sheikh Abdiaziz Abu Mus’ab  claimed that the group killed many Somali soldiers, “Our men ambushed the apostate forces killing many them of eventually, while the rest fled and we are now pursuing them” said Abu Mus’ab. “We also captured three military vehicles which they fled from and burned another” he added.

 

Despite the claims made by Al-Shabaab, the Somali government & the AMISOM have remained quiet regarding incident with neither of the two countering the claims, which left many soldiers dead.

 

Residents in Fiidow have reported that Al-Shabaab had taken over the town yesterday afternoon immediately after the battle while displaying three vehicles, two of them armed with anti-aircraft guns, which they claimed to have captured from the government forces.
