Somalia recalls its ambassador from Kenya after arrest of Somali Consular

Mogadishu (Harar24) –Somali government has recalled its ambassador from Kenya due to the recent arrest of one it’s top diplomats by the Kenyan police,  following the ongoing crackdown against  Somalis in Kenya.

Ambassador Mohamed Ali “Amerika” arrived in Mogadishu this morning where he was received by officials from the ministry of foreign affairs, including the deputy minister of foreign affairs Mahad Mahmud Salad, where the two of them held a press conference at the airport, showing their discontent at the arrest of the Somali consular in Nairobi.

Mohamed Amerika mentioned in the press conference that he returned because the government called him back to brief them on what happened, so that the Somali government could take a decision regarding the situation. He claimed that Kenya had broken international regulations applied to diplomats when it arrested the Somali consular.

Somali deputy foreign minister informed the media that they called the ambassador back to discuss about the illegal arrest of the consular in Nairobi last Friday night, as he was heading towards his house. According to the deputy minister the ambassador attempted to intervene in the arrest of the consular as he tried to inform authorities that he was indeed a consular, however the Kenyan authorities refused as he claimed.

This is the first time Somali government officially speak out against the illegal detention of a Somali in Kenya, however many Somalis question as to why the government remained silent since the beginning of the crackdowns on many Somalis in Kenya.

Analysts believe that this reaction by the Somali government will have very little effect regarding the illegal detention of Somalis in Kenya, and suggest that this could be an attempt to pacify Somalis who have been unhappy with the silence of their government regarding the treatment of Somalis in Kenya recently.
