BREAKING: Somali journalist killed in Mogadishu car bomb
Mogadishu (Harar24) – Somali journalist Yusuf Ahmed Abukar known as “Yusuf Kaynan” was killed in a car bomb in Mogadishu’s Hamarweyne district this morning, as confirmed by officials and eyewitnesses.
Yusuf Kaynan who had been employed at several local radio stations in the past, including Radio Shabelle, Radio Danan, Radio Kulimiye and before his death was an editor at Radio Mustaqbal, was killed as a result of an explosive device fitted to his car.
According to eyewitnesses Yusuf Kaynan was driving nearby the ‘Elgab junction in the Hamarweyne district when his car suddenly exploded, causing the complete destruction of his car and his death, no other casualties were reported and no one has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.
Somalia has attained a reputation of being one of the worst countries to operate as journalist, with more than two dozens of journalists killed in the past two years in the country, mostly in Mogadishu. Many other journalists have also fled the country out of concern for their own safety and those of their families. According to CPJ, Somalia ranks as number two in the world where journalists are slain and the killers go free.
