Clan militias accused of looting & raping in the town of Marka

Mogadishu (Harar24) – Waves of looting and raping are taking place in the town of Marka by clan militias who took over the town last month from rival clan militias, as reported by local elders and witnesses.

At least four cases of rape have been confirmed to have occurred in the past 24 hours committed by Habargidir clan militias, who are targeting their rival Biyomal clan. Looting and break-ins to stores have also been reported to have taken place, it’s highly likely for the number of victims to rise as the militias are still on their looting spree.

“Inhabitants of the Bulojan neighborhood who mostly are Biyomal are fleeing  in the area in large numbers after Habargidir militias began wreaking havoc, looting and raping. So far we know that four women have been raped, two who were young girls” a local elder in the town told Harar24. “The clan militias are still on their spree and are seeking revenge” he added.

Mahamed Abukar, who was one of the Biyomal clan elders who went to the police station after his wive was raped, said that upon arriving at the station the police told them that the clan militias won’t take orders from them. After they left disappointed they were attacked by the militia and beaten.

The conflict in the Lower Shabelle region which has claimed many lives has been escalating since the past few months, with no solution in sight, despite promises and visits to the area by senior government officials, including the prime minister and the interior minister. The town also hosts an AMISOM bases, however the troops are  not doing anything to stop the conflict.
