Prominent Somali MP killed with another injured in Mogadishu attack
Mogadishu (Harar24) – A drive-by shooting this morning in the Hamarweyne district of Mogadishu has left one prominent Somali MP dead with another seriously injured, as confirmed by officials.
Mohamed Mahmud Hayd. a former army general, who was serving as a MP was shot dead after gunmen attacked his vehicle before driving off, another MP known as Abdullahi ‘Onka along with a bodyguard were left injured in the attack.
The attack was claimed by the Al-Shabaab group, who justified the attack by stating that MPs were “aiding the foreign occupation” and also “legislating besides Allah”, as the media were told by their military spokesman Abu Mus’ab Abdulaziz.
MP Hayd is the third Somali MP to be killed at the hands of Al-Shabaab in the last three months in Mogadishu, the killing also corresponds with the increased assassinations in the city since the start of Ramadan despite promises by the Somali government to tighten security and prevent anticipated attacks.
