BREAKING: Somali presidential palace in Mogadishu under attack

Mogadishu (Harar24) – Heavy fighting is ongoing at the presidential palace, after heavily armed Al-Shabaab militants attacked the palace prompting a vicious gun battle, according to officials and witnesses.

According to several sources the militants made their way to the palace after forcefully penetrating three major checkpoints in Mogadishu, who eventually after fighting their way into the presidential palace managed to enter into the Somali prime minister’s office where some of the fiercest fighting is ongoing along with the finance minister’s office.

Initial reports suggest that more than ten dead bodies of government soldiers can be seen outside. With the electricity at the presidential palace and surrounding area cut off and all roads leading to the palace closed the situation remains complete disarray, despite officials claiming the attack is over.

The attack was claimed by the Al-Shabaab movement whose military spokesman Abu Mus’ab Abdulaziz said their “commandos attacked the presidential palace”, while emphasizing that “the operation wasn’t finished”.

More details to be provided as they become available.
