Somali MP claims security forces attempted to assassinate him
Mogadishu (Harar24) – A Somali member of parliament who claimed to have survived an assassination attempt accused the Somali security forces of trying to kill him after they attacked his house last night near Mogadishu’s airport.
Abdiweli Mohamed Qanyare, the son of the notorious warlord Mohamed Qanyare Afrah, says that heavily armed Somali security forces attacked his residence where a gun battle ensued between his bodyguards and the security forces, whom Abdiweli Qanyare claims were intending to kill him.
“At first I thought the attackers where Al-Shabaab, however once I saw their technicals I realized they were the government’s security forces” said Qanyare. “They opened heavy fire on my house, my bodyguards returned fire and we managed to repulse them” he added.
Mohamed Qanyare also claimed that he would take the attackers and their commanders to court, while adding that it was beyond unjustifiable that security forces whom are supposed to protect MPs are the ones who are now attacking them.
In a separate incident in the same night, Somali security forces also attacked the former warlord Abdi Nure Siyad more commonly known as “Abdi Waal”, a long time American ally and a member of the American-backed “Alliance for the Restoration of Peace and Counter-Terrorism” in 2006, as he was leaving a popular hotel known as Hotel Jazira near Mogadishu’s airport. This prompted yet another gun fight between his guards and the security forces, giving him the opportunity to slip away, however a senior intelligence officer was killed during the gun fight, who was identified only as “Aidid”, and is said to have been leading the attack against the former warlord.
The attack on a Somali MP last night comes at a time were five Somali MPs were assassinated in Mogadishu this year, although all attacks on them were claimed by the Al-Shabaab Islamist group, this however is the first time an MP openly claims that an attempt on his life was made by Somali security forces, with no explanation yet from the Somali authorities.
