Heavy battle in Mogadishu, as government & AMISOM forces target well-armed politician
Mogadishu (Harar24) – A heavy battle erupted between Somali government forces aided by AMISOM and well known Wadajir district based politician in the Somali capital as part of ongoing operations in Mogadishu by the government to disarm politicians, former warlords and militias.
According to residents Somali security forces attacked the residence of former Wadajir district commissioner, Ahmed Da’i. The politician backed by clan militias loyal to him managed to initially repulse the security forces, before heavily armed AMISOM forces in tanks and APCs came to their support.
The battle raged on for three hours with many clan fighters rushing to the aid of the politician according witnesses. “Ahmed Da’i was attacked this morning by security forces, he and the militias managed to fend them off after a 30-minutes battle, after which AMISOM and the Somali army arrived” a resident told Harar24. “The gunfire is still ongoing, with gunshots being fired from almost every house in the area” he added.
The attacked ex-district commissioner, Ahmed Da’i, whilst speaking to local radio stations claimed the men who attacked him were “terrorists” insinuating thereby the AMISOM and the government forces. He further stated that he didn’t know why he was attacked and would defend his life and property at all costs.
With the battle seemingly having subsided several casualties have been confirmed from both sides and an unknown number of civilians, with no comments from either the Somali government or the AMISOM forces yet.
