Deadly attack on intelligence prison in Mogadishu leaves several dead
Mogadishu (Harar24) – Several people, including intelligence agents, are feared dead and injured after a car bomb was detonated at the well-known Godka Jila’ow intelligence prison followed by a stream of attackers storming the building.
The Godka Jila’ow intelligence prison in Mogadishu, situated very close to the national intelligence headquarter at the district of Bondhere, came under attack as the driver of a vehicle loaded with explosives rammed his car into a checkpoint adjacent to the gate of the prison. Soon after a vehicle carrying armed men in Somali military uniforms arrived who stormed the building, opening fire after remotely detonating their vehicle.
According to eyewitnesses a heavy gun battle ensued between the attackers and security forces present, lasting up to an hour. “I saw up to thirteen dead bodies being carried away from the scene, much more where injured” a witness said.
The attack was claimed by Al-Shabaab, its military spokesman said while legitimizing the attack that the intelligence prison “was a place of torture and of recruiting spies”. He further claimed that they killed fifteen intelligence workers. On the other hand an intelligence officer told Harar24 that they repelled the Al-Shabaab attack, killing seven of them in the process, he further added that two intelligence officers lost their lives during the attack.
Mogadishu has been experiencing a string of attacks on highly sensitive places carried out by Al-Shabaab, the last one being the attack on Somalia’s presidential palace last month, with the Somali parliament and the UN compound targeted before that.
