Reconciliatory conference held in Kismayo amidst emerging disputes
Mogadishu (Harar24) – A reconciliatory conference was opened yesterday in Kismayo, which was attended by notable figures such as the Somali president and delegates from the international community.
The conference is said to be held in an attempt to reconcile between the opposing factions in Kismayo in order to establish administration in Jubbaland which will be inclusive of all clans and politicians from the Lower Jubba, Middle Jubba and Gedo regions.
However disputes emerged as the previous warlord and former defense minister, Col. Bare Hirale, who was from amongst those invited to the conference, rejected the invitation claiming that the conference is being led by certain people who are looking after their own personal interests.
He further accused the conference itself, the security prepared for it, the subjects discussed and the timing of it are all in favor of Ahmed Madobe, whom he sees as his rival. “The conference should be led by the Government of Somalia, instead of Ahmed Madobe, whose authority I don’t recognize, and that’s why we reject this conference” said Hirale, who’s militia have fought Madobe’s militias in Kismayo several times of the past two years.
Many analysts and experts have casted doubt over the effectivity of reconciliatory efforts proposed by IGAD and the international community, which they claim are completely devised by them and simply imposed on the Somali people. Several similar conferences have been held in the past which were labeled as successful, only to be discovered to be the complete opposite.
