Heavy battles reported at Galgala mountains between militants & Puntland forces

Mogadishu (Harar24) – A heavy battle was reported yesterday to have occurred at the Galgala mountains between Al-Shabaab fighters and Puntland forces, when the latter attacked bases belonging to the former situated in the mountains, with both sides claiming to have the upper hand.

The battle which erupted in the early hours of Wednesday after hundreds of US-trained PIS and “Darawish” troops backed by heavy artillery and technicals sought to attack Al-Shabaab bases nestled deep in the Galgala mountains, led to both sides exchanging heavy fire for hours.

The president of the semi-autonomous state of Puntland, Abdiweli Gas, who addressed media outlets in the town of Garowe claimed to have defeated the Al-Shabaab fighters in the Galgala mountains while adding that they took over their bases. He further added that the militants have thirty days to surrender themselves.

However on the other hand the claims were rejected by the group’s military spokesman, Abdulaziz Abu Mus’ab, who said that their fighters successfully repelled the attack, killing twenty “enemy soldiers” in the process and further destroying two vehicles.

Aside from the claims of both sides, several independent sources confirm that battles are still ongoing at the mountains, while adding that a senior Puntland military commander, identified as Col. Fu’ad Ahmed Qoryod known as “La’ag Don”, was killed in the battles.

The Galgala mountains situated in the north-eastern of Somalia, which is also commonly known to people as the “Somalia’s Tora Bora”, due to the fact that it serves as a militant hideout, it’s also a strategic location with plenty of water sources and fertile land, giving fighters to fortify themselves there for long period of times.
