Second Somali official assassinated in Mogadishu in less than 24 hours
Mogadishu (Harar24) – The deputy commissioner of the Hawlwadag district in Mogadishu was gunned down by assassins this morning in a drive-by shooting in Wadajir district’s main market, as confirmed by officials and eyewitnesses.
Yusuf Hilal, the deputy district commissioner, who’s vehicle came under attack when another vehicle came parallel and sprayed it with bullets died instantly at the scene, along with one of his bodyguards, while the attackers escaped.
The attack was immediately claimed by the Al-Shabaab movement, making it the second official to be assassinated by the group in less than 24-hours, with the previous victim being the deputy chief of Somali immigration Mahmud Dhabarey, who was killed in a similar attack at Mogadishu’s KM-4 junction.
Al-Shabaab’s military spokesman, Abu Mus’ab Abdulaziz, stated in a broadcasted message through the group’s own radio station Andalus, that they’re “conducting special operations in Mogadishu targeting Somali government officials” whom he accused of being “mobilized, funded and protected by enemies of Islam”.
