Somali authorities officially ban face veil in Central Somalia
Mogadishu (Harar24) – In a controversial and unprecedented move the Somali government has placed an official ban on wearing the face veil in the town of Dhusamareeb.
Nur Elmi , deputy head for the police force in Dhusamareeb, stated the face veil was banned in a bid to strengthen security in the town as he addressed local media. “The face veil is not allowed in our controlled areas, and anyone seen wearing it will face legal consequences” he said.
The town of Dhusamareeb which’s situated in the Galgaduud region, has a history of banning the face veil while it was ruled by the Ethiopian backed Sufi militia “Ahlu Sunnah wal Jama’ah”, who were involved in a bitter war with Al-Shabaab militants for the past seven years. The Sufi militias were notorious for ripping face veils of women who passed by the town.
However, late last year the Somali government took control of the town after the Sufi militias were integrated into the government, causing many women to believe they could wear the face veil in public, instead they are now faced with legal consequences if seen with their faces covered.
