Al-Shabaab overruns major military base in Puntland kills over 45 soldiers
Mogadishu – lslamist militant group Al-Shabaab killed more than 40 Puntland soldiers and seized control of their military base in Af-Arur village 75 KM west of the port town of Bosaso Thursday, Residents & officials tell the media.
The battle which erupted in the early hours of Thursday morning after militants overrun Af-urur military base which hosts hundreds of “Darawish” troops. Major Mohamed Abdi, a Puntland military officer, told the Reuters news agency that 20 of their soldiers were killed &14 military cars were also burned during the heavy clashes.
However security officials tell VOA Somali service that at least 45 Puntland soldier were killed in the deadly dawn raid on the military base in Af-urur.
Al-Shabab military spokesman Abdiasis Abu Musab claims the attack & tells the media that the group killed 61 soldiers at the Af-Urur military base close to Golis Mountains.
The Golis mountains situated in the north-eastern part of Somalia, which is also commonly known to people as the “Somalia’s Tora Bora”, due to the fact that it serves as a militant hideout. It’s also a strategic location with plenty of water sources and fertile land, giving fighters to fortify themselves there for long period of times.
