Al-Shabaab attacks KDF bases in Kismayo
Kismayo (Harar24) – The thunderous sounds of mortar shells echoed all over Kismayo as the base turned airport manned by Kenyan forces was shelled last night by what is believed to have been an attack coordinated by Al-Shabaab.
A resident told our correspondent: “It was very quiet and the majority of the city was fast asleep. Suddenly we heard explosions and shelling, which was followed by a lot of shooting.” He further added: “These kinds of things are not unusual here, we are used to hearing them almost daily, but it still frightens us.”
Another local told us: “This is the work of Al-Shabaab, they enter the city at night where they carry out their attack and then retreat”
The exact number of casualties cannot be confirmed but according our correspondent some locals believe that there were casualties in last night’s attack. This comes amidst a time where the Al-Shabaab movement has threatened to step up its attacks against foreign forces.
Kismayo which located in the Lower Jubba province has seen a lot of violence since the past year after Kenyan troops pushed Al-Shabaab out of the city. Gun attacks, explosions and shelling are not uncommon in the city as the Kenyan forces still face attacks from Al-Shabaab members who still continue to fight the Kenyan forces.
