Al-Shabaab releases hour long video on Woolwich attack

By Harar24′s Editorials team

Al-Shabaab’s media wing, Al-Kataib released a 58 minutes long video today. The title of the video “Woolwich attack: It’s an eye for an eye” appears to have been taken from the words of Michael Adebolajo, who after killing Lee Rigby at Woolwich said in front of a camera said: “An eye for an eye & tooth for a tooth”. The video was taken down several times and digitally corrupted by what is believed to be Western intelligence agancies, and until know digitally corrupted versions are in circulations. Harar24 managed to obtain digitally corrupted copy, yet of watchable quality.

The video which is completely in English, seems to be targeted mainly at an English speaking audience and in particular at Muslim youth in Britain. It heavily focuses on lone wolf operations and encourages viewers to carry out such operations. “Jihad is an obligation upon every Muslim in the West” declares the mysterious presenter who has a distinct British accent. “So if it’s impossible for you to make it safely to any of the lands of jihad, then follow the example of your brothers in Woolwich, Toulouse, Texas and Boston” he further added.

The video also encourages viewers to watch another video on the same subject by Al-Qaeda’s media wing As-Sahab. It further encourages viewers to read a book on jihad translated by the late Anwar al-Awlaki, which was also read by Roshanara Choudhry before attacking a British MP. It also persuades viewers to get “inspired by Inspire (magazine)”, which al-Awlaki also contributed to.

Use whatever you can, says Al-Shabaab

It is not unusual for jihadi videos to be laden with high graphics and effects. However Al-Shabaab this time used a never technique never adopted before in any jihadi videos, kinetic typography. The video goes very smooth and has somewhat of a “storyline”, starting off with some Islamic history and how Islam’s empire declined, to the current situation of Muslims around the globe, to the rise of jihad, to the suffering of Muslims and then finally to what in the video is believed as the solution, lone jihad.

Slick: Al-Shabaab tries something new

In the video certain Muslim scholars and community leaders are referred to as being on the “government’s payroll” for speaking against the Woolwich attack and “distancing themselves from the mujahideen”. Al-Shabaab in the video claims that the Woolwich attack was a result of British foreign policy, for killing Muslims and for aiding the United States in their “war of terror”.

The British government and its security apparatus have always worried about British youth going to Somalia to join and fight within the ranks of Al-Shabaab. For the first time, Al-Shabaab openly admits to having numerous British youth in its ranks, many of whom have been killed in action. The video goes into detail about these fighters. In the video a young man named “Talha” is seen, who was born and raised in Tower Hamlets borough of London. He calls on fellow Muslims to join him, so that they could “establish an Islamic state”.  He was killed in November 2012 in raid carried out by British & American forces, a raid similar to the one that occurred in Barawe on 5th October 2013.

Al-Qaeda and its affiliates are known for having attacked Western targets and threaten to continue doing so. They have been beseeching Muslims in the West to act, take up arms and target Western targets. Some have responded, but in the wake of this video, how many more will respond?
Within hours from now many will have downloaded this video. Many will be motivated, many will be awestruck. Could this video be the cause of another Woolwich scene?
