Suspected Al-shabab militants Carried out Coordinated attacks in Bosaaso
Puntland officials claim that up to sixty Al-Shabaab fighters attacked the central prison alone, while others attacked two police stations in the city. Al-Shabaab has yet to comment on the attack.
The prison chief Shire Said Mohamed said: “Up to sixty Al-Shabaab fighters opened fire on us from all directions; my deputy and another soldier were killed in the attack. I sustained shrapnel injuries”. If however Al-Shabaab claims the attack, this would be the first major attack carried out inside the boundaries of Bosaso by Al-Shabaab.
According to several sources three people were confirmed dead in the attack, among them the deputy prison chief known as Abdi Abshir. Sources also indicated that several others were injuried. Casualties on the attackers side remain unknown as no one has yet claimed responsibility. However Puntland officials confidently claimed that the attackers were Al-Shabaab members who were trying to free their comrades inside Bosaso’s central prison.
This attack followed coordinated attacks by Al-Shabaab in Mogadishu, such as the Makkah hotel bombings and the shelling of “Villa Somalia”.
